Gilt bronze clock with Adonis, late 18th century
Period: Second half of the 18th century
Price: € 2.400
Refined gilt bronze clock, mounted on an ebonized wooden base and equipped with a glass bell for protection. The clock is decorated with a statuary figure on the left, identifiable as Adonis, the lover of the goddess Venus, with the typical attributes of a hunter; also on the right are depicted a hunting dog and a spear. Furthermore, at the base of the clock there is a scene of clear classical reference, in which Adonis is recognized lying down and probably the goddess of the hunt, Diana, who wakes him up with a bow in her hand. The clock face is decorated with motifs of triumph and has Roman numerals. The mechanism, original to the period, has a silk thread suspension, and the chime reproduces the sound of the hours and half hours; the machine is intact and currently under review. It is a clock of great class and elegance, capable of adding a touch of refinement and antiquity to the decor of any environment. French manufacture from the Neoclassical period, around the end of the 18th century. Measurements: H x W x D 44 x 45 x 24cm
